Factors Influencing the Timeliness in Completion of National Projects in Kenya: A Case of Nairobi City County Roads
Abstract
This study aimed at finding out factors that influence timely completion of national project taking a case study of road projects in Nairobi County, Kenya. The research was guided by the following research objectives; to determine the influence of project financing on timeliness in completion of in Kenya, to examine the influence of project planning on timeliness in completion of in Kenya, to determine the influence of stakeholder engagement on timeliness in completion of in Kenya and finally to determine the influence of contractor performance on timeliness in completion of in Kenya. The study focused on how finances, project planning, stakeholder engagement and contractor performance influenced timely completion of road construction projects. The study employed descriptive research design. The study also employed stratified random sampling technique in coming up with a sample size of 50. The study relied mostly on primary data sources where questionnaires were administered and utilized as source of data. Quantitative data was coded and entered into Statistical Package for Social Scientist (SPSS) and analysed using descriptive statistics as percentages, mode and quantitative analysis using chi-square. The findings of this study will help policy makers on key issues related to project development and management with particular reference to road construction. The study found that there was a positive and significant relationship between project financing, planning, stakeholder engagement and contractor performance to timeliness completion of road projects. The study recommended that in order to enhance timely completion of projects implementation, the policy makers in the ministry of transport and infrastructure should at issues around project financing, project planning, stakeholder engagement and contractor performance. For instance, ensuring timely disbursement of contractor payments, proper project costing, clarity of project scope, inclusivity of stakeholder in project decision making and considering the field technical and financial capacity of the contractor.
